Lara Maritan (born the 04/03/1973 in Padova, Italy), received a degree (B.S. and M.S.) in Geological Sciences in 1998 and a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences in 2003 from the University of Padova (Italy). From 2003 to 2007 she has been a post-doc research assistant at the University of Padova. Between 1999 and 2005 she visited the University of Glasgow (UK) and the University of Cardiff (UK), founded by scholarships from A. Gini Foundation, the Italian Society of Mineralogy and Petrology (SIMP), and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei-Royal Society. From 2007 she is assistant professor in Georesources and minero-petrographic applications for the environment and cultural heritage (GEO/09) at the Department of Geosciences, University of Padova.

The research activity of Lara Maritan focuses on the application of petrography to the study of materials of the cultural heritage, and on experimental petrology aimed to model firing processes of traditional ceramics, and more in detail on the following topics:
- petrography, mineralogy and geochemistry of ancient ceramic productions;
- post-depositional processes and formation of secondary phases in terrestrial and lagoon-like environments in ancient ceramic materials;
- petrography of lithic materials for provenance studies and conservation;
- modelling firing processes of clay materials at different firing conditions;
- microstructural, mechanic, physical analysis of modern bricks;
- microtextures and microstratigraphy as tools for the identification of the painting technique;
- characterisation of pigments.
