Impact of climate change and risk mitigation: a focus on fluvial and estuarine ecosystems

05.03.2024

Within the framework of the Excellence Project "Geosciences for Sustainable Development", the research carried out by Alvise Finotello, Assistant Professor at the Department of Geosciences of the University of Padua, focuses on understanding the dynamics and the evolution of both fluvial and coastal-estuarine ecosystems.

"This is a critical research path because beside having intrinsic environmental and recreational values and supporting high biodiversity, fluvial and estuarine environments also provide several ecosystem services that are of interest to and of value to our society, including, for example, water purification, nutrient cycling, flood regulation and provision of resources such as food and freshwater. Moreover, fluvial and estuarine ecosystems play a key role in regulating the Earth's climate by cycling and sequestering large amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases", as Alvise Finotello explains in the video.
