Lithium in Igneous and Volcano-Sedimentary Systems: Geological Aspects and Exploration Strategies

The geological characteristics of lithium deposits and strategies for their exploration

On May 20, 2025, the Department of Geosciences at the University of Padua will host a short course on lithium mineralization in igneous and volcano-sedimentary systems, focusing on geological aspects and exploration strategies. The event is organized by the "Strategic Raw Materials and Mineral Deposits" group of the Italian Geological Society (GGM-SGI) and coordinated by Paolo Nimis (University of Padua) and Simone Vezzoni (CNR-IGG, coordinator of GGM-SGI).

The course will explore the geological characteristics and formation processes of lithium deposits, with a particular focus on:

  • Different mineralization styles in granite-pegmatite and volcano-sedimentary systems

  • Tectono-magmatic conditions favorable for the formation of lithium-rich provinces

  • Exploration strategies for identifying and characterizing new lithium deposits

The event will feature Francesco Putzolu, an expert in economic geology and mineralization in magmatic and hydrothermal environments, and Andrea Dini, director of the Institute of Geosciences and Earth Resources (CNR), specializing in geochemistry and the metallogenesis of critical minerals.

The program includes a series of lectures on lithium mineralization processes in different geological settings, followed by discussion sessions and an examination of mineralized samples.

Date: May 20, 2025
Location: Room 1F, Department of Geosciences, University of Padua
Registration: Send an email to giacimenti@socgeol.it (registration deadline: May 5, 2025)
Online streaming: Available upon request

An opportunity for students, researchers, and professionals interested in economic geology and mineral exploration of a strategic resource for sustainable technologies.
