International Day of Women and Girls in Science - 11 February 2025

Also for the 11th edition, the Department of Geosciences participates in the International Day on Women and Girls in Science, promoted by the UN, celebrated simultaneously all over the world and recognized by Law 187/2023 (Establishment of the National Week of Science, Technology, Engineering and mathematical - 4- 11 February).
All initiatives aim to promote participation in scientific research without distinction of gender and seek to raise society’s awareness of the challenges and opportunities women face in the field of science.
Celebrating the International Day for Women and Girls in Sciencemeans recognising the crucial importance of ensuring full and equal participation of women in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Gender equality in science requires a constant commitment to eliminate inequalities in career opportunities, working conditions, recognition of merit and in socio-cultural context. In continuity with the 2024 edition, a social campaign is proposed involving researchers, and PhD students in short double interviews, focused on their research experiences abroad and, more generally, on how the socio-cultural context influences research, highlighting the opportunities and limitations that emerge in different countries.
From this perspective, the goal is to analyze these dynamics through the lenses of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI), valorizing the unique experiences and challenges that researchers face in different cultural and institutional contexts.
The idea is to explore how cultural differences, language barriers and local practices can represent both an opportunity to enrich scientific work and a limitation to overcome.
The ultimate goal is to generate a reflection on how to build global research networks that not only respect but enhance diversity, removing barriers and promoting more equitable and collaborative science.
