The enhancement of Italian raw materials resources
Critical raw materials are essential and strategic for modern and future economies, but are at high supply risk, mostly because their primary natural resources are unevenly distributed around the world.
In March 2023 the European Commission published the “Critical Raw Materials Act” which identified a list of 34 critical raw materials, which are important for the EU economy and face a risk of disruption. The act aims to increase and diversify the EU’s critical raw materials supply strengthen circularity, including recycling support research and innovation on resource efficiency and the development of substitutes.
Maybe not everyone knows that Italy hosts critical raw materials resources. However, these resources are underexplored and underdeveloped.
The goal of the project led by Prof. Paolo Nimis, as part of the Excellence Project "Geosciences for Sustainable Development", is to get a better idea of the distribution of critical raw materials in some key areas of an important alkaline magmatic province in Central Italy and to provide the scientific basis for a better valorization of Italian critical raw material resources
